The Difference Between Preference and Fear

Post Published: January 12, 2023

Beth Winder shares her thoughts on the ‘difference between preference and fear’ in this eye-opening piece!

Being an Ataxia warrior means that you constantly have to keep moving forward. The question is: do you prefer not to do something, or are you afraid to do it? I found that I was doing things because other people thought I should, but it didn’t leave me feeling good. I came to a realisation that I need to push myself to do things out of my comfort zone, but I also need to trust myself by questioning why.

When I started questioning my choices, it occurred to me that I was doing things to impress others, trying to fulfil their standards. We all have a battery life, our energy, which is why it’s important to act on decisions accordingly. Don’t forget we all need recharging. Do the things you utilise your energy on leave you feeling satisfied?

As the musician, Bruce Dickinson said, “life is too short to be doing things you don’t love”. Make sure you understand the difference between preference and fear, and you always question why.
