Ataxia UK’s research team is looking for contributors

Post Published: November 19, 2025

Ataxia UK’s Internal Ethics Committee is recruiting new members. This role involves attending regular online Committee meetings to give feedback on material to be used for ataxia research. This includes research surveys, patient information sheets and consent forms. The Committee reviews these materials to ensure the content is ethical, primarily to protect the rights and wellbeing of potential participants.

The Committee consists of 5-6 Friends of Ataxia UK who either have ataxia themselves or are close to someone who has ataxia. No specific background is requested; however, you should be interested in the research done on ataxia, be willing to read surveys, patient information and consent forms, and attend meetings. Meetings are held over Zoom, and are not held more regularly than once per month. One meeting per year could be held in person at our offices in Highgate, but those that would not be able to attend an in person meeting are still encouraged to consider joining. Members of the Committee are occasionally asked to provide feedback over email.

Ataxia UK’s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is recruiting new lay members. This role involves attending Committee meetings three times a year to discuss research grant applications and contributing to the SAC’s discussions on which projects to recommend for funding to the board of Trustees. Meetings are held on Zoom.

The Committee consists of seven to eight scientific members and three lay members. No specific scientific background is requested; however, you should be interested in the research done on ataxia, be willing to read research project applications (all of which include lay summaries) and attend meetings. More information about the research application process and selection can be found on our website here.

If you are interested in becoming a member of either of these Committees, please contact the research team at research@ataxia.org.uk.
