Let's hear from some volunteers

Derek Wood - Coordinator of Farnham Support Group and Ataxia Centre Volunteer
"I was diagnosed with Late-Onset Idiopathic Spino-Cerebellar Ataxia in 2009 and after attending South Downs branch meetings for a while, I was invited to an exploratory meeting in Farnham. Long story short, I was nominated group leader and still perform that function today.

A few years ago, I was asked to join the group of volunteers meeting patients after their Queens Square consultations. That was the single most rewarding thing I've ever done. Since the pandemic we have carried on online. In addition, a year ago I joined the Friends Connect scheme and that, too, has been very fulfilling.

I have also become involved in developing our Support Group & Branch network and I look forward to working with our colleagues to enhance the service to our fellow Ataxians. There is no doubt my symptoms have progressed but I enjoy the interaction with everyone and I am not ashamed to admit that my activity is not entirely altruistic as I personally derive a great deal of satisfaction.

There are many Ataxians whose lives are far more affected than I am by the condition so if I can do anything to help them I will. I am constantly so impressed by their resilience and bravery."

Derek Taylor - Chair of West Of Scotland Branch
"I’m currently Chair of the West of Scotland Branch, having been treasurer of the Branch for about 10 years before this. I want to ‘give something back’ to our community and to use my skills and share experiences to help and offer support to my fellow Ataxians. As well as being affected by ataxia, I think Ataxia UK 'punches above its weight' in the support it can provide via support groups as well as the helpline and research."

Rebecca Downing
"I volunteer for Ataxia UK because I make a positive difference to the lives of those affected by ataxia in many ways!"
