Befriending Service

We are aware that 2020 was a challenging year for the ataxia community with lockdowns and restrictions across the UK meaning many people have been unable to see family or friends. Many people reported feeling isolated or just missing their usual social interactions so we created a befriending service to provide an opportunity for Friends to connect with volunteers who are also affected by ataxia on a one-to-one, weekly basis. The service is available for everyone living with ataxia, as well as their friends, partners, family and carers. You can chat about whatever you would like to talk about, whether it’s about related to ataxia or not. All our volunteers are fully trained and they can contact you on a day and time that suits you.

Building on the feedback and experiences of our existing Telephone Befriending service, we have made a few improvements for 2021 including:

  • More ways to connect – choose which communication works best for you from telephone, Zoom (video calls) and Telegram (online messaging app).
  • Start with four sessions – if you don’t want to commit to ongoing calls, we suggest starting with four calls and then you can decide if you want to continue using the service.

To show your interest in Friends Connect, please fill out the registration form below. You will then be contacted by a member of the InControl team to pair you up with a volunteer.

If you know someone who might benefit from Friends Connect, then please tell them about it and let them know how to get in touch. If they’re not able to fill out the online form, they can email us at volunteering@ataxia.org.uk or call us on 020 7091 1590.
