There are some basic rules that we ask you to adhere to:
- Every rider must wear a safety helmet
- Riders are responsible for ensuring that their bikes are roadworthy
- Every rider must ride in accordance with the Highway Code and be aware of local road/traffic conditions at all times.
- Every rider pays attention to the route warning signs and particularly is careful to ride down a hill at a safe speed.
- Remember that this is not a race
Disclaimer
We have attempted to select routes that are not only challenging for the riders, but are also enjoyable and safe for everybody of variable ability to ride.
Whilst we have attempted to identify likely areas of ‘increased risk’ to the rider, it is not possible to eliminate all risks. Our responsibility is to identify risks that it would be reasonable to conclude exist and introduce control measures to reduce them. The risk assessments have been reviewed by multiple people and are made available for you to view.
As organisers, we have attempted to reduce the risk relating to adverse weather conditions by holding the event in mid-September. Unfortunately, we know that we can never guarantee the weather but this does go some way to ensure warmer and calmer weather.
Participation in a cycling event on public roads can be physically demanding and may pose certain risks to participants, especially those with ataxia. Individuals should take into account their own physical abilities and medical history. Before participating in the Ataxia Classic, participants with ataxia should consult with their medical provider or healthcare team to discuss any concerns or questions they may have about their ability to participate.
Please note that the ultimate responsibility rests with you, the rider. It is only you who can make the decision as to your own safety. It is your responsibility to adjust your speed and assess road conditions at a particular place, at a specific time relating to the prevailing weather conditions, volume of traffic or road surface etc, at busy crossings it is your responsibility to assess the traffic conditions and only cross when it is safe to do so. Remember, this is not a race so take the time to ensure you are safe to cross rather than rush the decision.
We will have a support vehicle out on the roads and you always have the option of asking for assistance, turning around or stopping.
We have Ataxia UK rest stops on this ride where you can receive water and ask the marshals there any questions you may have. If you feel unwell or in the event of adverse weather conditions, we would far rather you stop and await the arrival of support than carry on and suffer fatigue or worse. There will be marshals at key higher risk areas which are also marked on your route maps. Marshals at these points will be wearing ‘High Visibility’ vests.
We ask that all riders work with us to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the day.
This disclaimer is not intended to discourage you from participating in cycling events. Rather, it is intended to encourage you to make informed decisions about your participation and to take all necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
By signing up, you agree:
- To participate in this event entirely at your own risk and you agree that you must ride in a manner which is safe to them and others.
- That it is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to take part in and complete the ride safely.
- That it is your responsibility to ensure that the bike used is appropriate and safe for the route and you.
- You are aware that when riding on a public highway the function of marshals is only to indicate direction and that you must decide whether the movement is safe.
- To wear appropriate clothing and safety equipment for the weather/road conditions on the day.
- To rely on your own ability in recognising and reacting to all hazards.
- That no liability whatsoever shall attach to Ataxia UK, promoter, promoting club, organiser or event sponsor in respect of any injury, loss or damage suffered by me in or by reason of the event, howsoever caused.
- To follow all traffic laws and regulations, and be aware of my surroundings at all times.
Ataxia UK will use the personal information you are submitting to us in accordance with our Privacy Notice, which is available on our website at: https://www.ataxia.org.uk/privacy-policy/
