Last December, YOU ALL did something incredibly special...

Thanks to your generous donations during Ataxia UK's Big Give Christmas Challenge, we are delighted to officially announce the opening of the UK's first Ataxia Specialist Centre for children!

Based at the Sheffield Ataxia Centre, the paediatric centre for children will aim to provide the best possible outpatient care to children and their families, including treatment and a full range of diagnostic facilities including advanced neuro-imaging and genetic testing of ataxias.

Dr. Santosh Mordekar, Paediatric Neurologist with an expertise in ataxia will run the Centre with the support of James Bull, Paediatric Ataxia Specialist Nurse and their team of clinicians and nurses. We hope to open a second paediatric centre in London next year. Dr Santosh says:

I've been seeing children with various movement disorders including ataxia for 13 years and  am delighted that our Centre has now been accredited as the first Children's Ataxia Centre in the UK. I have been working closely with Professor Hadjivassiliou and Dr. Shanmugarajah managing combined clinics for 17-18 year olds to ensure smooth transition to adult care.

Quite simply, this incredible achievement wouldn't have been possible without your commitment to help make a vital difference in treatment for hundreds of children currently living with ataxia and newly diagnosed with an ataxia.

For all the young people who will benefit from ataxia paediatric centres, thank you!

But, we know there is still more to be done.

Whether it's a lack of local specialist ataxia neurologists or geographical location, we know that many Friends of Ataxia UK and families across the UK still lack the support and care they need and deserve.

For this year's Big Give 2019 Challenge, starting at 12pm on 3 December until 12pm, 10 December 2019, Ataxia UK is calling on your amazing support once more to help raise £68,000 to help fund the next crucial step to improving and increasing access to diagnosis and treatment FOR ALL.

With your support, our goal for this year's campaign will be to fund a ground-breaking pilot project to trial the launch of a 'virtual ataxia clinic' for patients to access online medical consultations at local hospitals and/or clinics with the UK's leading ataxia neurologists alongside their own current face-to-face consultations.

Ataxia UK will use all money raised to help fund this pilot scheme at a yet to be determined NHS Foundation Trust, and if successful, our vision is to ensure anyone diagnosed with an ataxia is able to get the support they truly need.

Ataxia UK believes that all people affected by ataxia deserve support, understanding, and a cure. We believe anyone with living with an ataxia condition should be able to access excellent care and services irrespective of their level of income or postcode.
