New start for Milton Keynes
The Milton Keynes support group invites anyone in the Buckinghamshire area who is connected with ataxia, whether a sufferer, carer, family member or friend to contact us and meet others with this rare condition. Our group continues to attract new members and is becoming a central meeting place in Milton Keynes for people affected by ataxia.
Last Saturday's meeting was attended by myself, Bob and his wife Jan and Pete. Apologies were received from Tony and Janet, who were unable to attend.
We had trouble finding parking spots outside the Barn. This is very unusual but it must have been due to the pre-Christmas shopping frenzy which meant that a lot of spots were take by shoppers using the spaces outside the Barn as an extra car park.
It was interesting to meet Pete. He told us that his ataxia was an episodic kind which may have been caused by his exposure to chemicals during his time as a pilot in the first Gulf War.
He also shared his experiences of trying to claim DLA and ESA (Employment Support Allowance) and agreed that sometimes you have to apply more than once in order to get what you need. I personally find these discussions extremely useful and recently succeeded in getting my DLA increased, partly as a result of advice I have been given at our support group meetings.
I wish everyone a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
