New start for Milton Keynes
The Milton Keynes support group invites anyone in the Buckinghamshire area who is connected with ataxia, whether a sufferer, carer, family member or friend to contact us and meet others with this rare condition. Our group continues to attract new members and is becoming a central meeting place in Milton Keynes for people affected by ataxia.
Last Saturday we met as usual at the Barn in Milton Keynes.
Those present were Doreen and Harry, Bob and Mike. Janet and Arlow sent their apologies for not being able to attend.
We discussed 2 upcoming events: a regional Ataxia conference at Basingstoke on June 15 and the Mobility Roadshow, which will be held at Telford between June 27 and June 29. It doesn't look like any of us will be attending the regional conference, apart from Bob, but some of us might be going to the Roadshow. I intend to go myself although I haven't decided on which day.

Mike also proposed an idea for a day trip on a boat. There is an organisation called Reach Out Plus which is based in St Albans and hires out boats which have wheelchair ramps and lifts, disabled access WC’s and showers. The boats also have a fully-fitted galley and flexible
seating arrangements. They are available to hire with a skipper and
crew supplied, or on a self-steer basis.
We are thinking of hiring a boat sometime between July 13 and July 31 or between August 12 and September 11. To hire a 12 passenger boat with a skipper would cost £228. We have £40 available in the kitty so this would mean a total cost of £188, so if we can get 9 or 10 people to come this would cost about £21 a head. Please let me know if any of you would be interested in coming and if you would be free on the dates mentioned above.
Mike also suggested setting up a stall in the Milton Keynes shopping centre in order to raise awareness of ataxia and possibley to raise a few funds. It is possible to hire a stall for a day in the Community Zone area of the Milton Keynes shopping centre. Ataxia UK would help by providing public liability insurance and publicity material. We haven't yet agreed a date for this but it would probably be in the summer or autumn. Again please let me know if you would like to take part in this.
