23 December 2005 - Ryan's golden Christmas with David Beckam & Jonny Wilkinson
Ryan Gibbons, aged ten, had his dream come true when he met David Beckham and Jonny Wilkinson as part of an extra special Blue Peter show televised on Christmas Day 2005.
Blue Peter presenter Liz Barker gave Ryan his Blue Peter Gold Badge; these are only awarded for really outstanding achievements. Ryan’s twin brother Frankie has Friedreich’s ataxia. Ryan was awarded the badge because of the help and support he gives to his mother (Louise, a single parent) and to Frankie.
Ryan was met at school by the Blue Peter team and told of a ‘mission’ he was to go on. The first part was a visit to the newly opened David Beckham Academy, Docklands, London. There he and Frankie played football with David Beckham and received signed goods. Ryan said, “It was brilliant, I scored two goals against him.”
As the second part of the mission, Ryan, Frankie and Louise were flown to Newcastle and taken to Jonny Wilkinson’s home. Ryan said, “I just couldn’t believe it when he opened the front door.”
Ryan and Frankie practiced their rugby skills against the England star and were amazed when they were spontaneously invited to tea with Jonny Wilkinson and his parents.
Ryan said at the end of the day, “This is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me and Frankie. We both look after each other. I have to do a lot of the running around for him. The Blue Peter badge means everything to me and meeting my heroes was just incredible. It hasn’t really sunk in yet.”
Louise said, “This is great, especially for Ryan, he does so much to help me with Frankie, it’s wonderful that his kindness has been recognized. This is without doubt the best Christmas ever and will stay in our memories forever.”
