Katie Henderson, a webmaster of Ataxia UK, has won the Helping Hand section of NTL’s Best of British Broadband awards for the best website to support a charitable cause. Her website is
www.ohbother.co.uk. Her site was one of six shortlisted by judges, which went on to win by public vote.
Katie is 21, lives in Coventry and has Friedreich’s ataxia –
‘I am extremely thrilled to have won this award. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my experiences through my website in order to help others affected by ataxia.. My thanks to everyone who voted for me.'
The ataxias are rare neurological disorders. It was previously estimated that around 5,000 people in the UK have the condition. This is now thought to be an under-estimate. People of any age may be affected, from babies to adults. People with ataxia may become progressively disabled, ultimately depending on others for their most basic personal needs. Many forms of ataxia are inherited. There is currently no treatment, and little that can be done to relieve symptoms.
Ataxia UK (www.ataxia.org.uk) is a registered charity providing information, contacts and support for people with ataxia, their families, friends and carers. We fund world class research into causes and treatments.
