About Ataxia

AMRC

The Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) is a registered charity to which the UK’s leading medical and health research charities belong.

Approximately one third of all public expenditure on medical and health research in the UK comes from medical research charities (source: AMRC website). The AMRC supports the charities in this important role by providing information and guidance, running training events and workshops and offering one-to-one consultation and assistance.

Being a member of the AMRC is widely recognised by universities, government and other funding bodies as a mark of quality.

Research

Ataxia UK and Ataxia Ireland jointly hosted an international Ataxia Research Conference in London on 1-3 November 2012. A summary of the conference will be available shortly.

One of Ataxia UK's main objectives is to fund high quality research into the ataxias. We aim to find causes and develop treatments to prevent the devastating effects of the ataxias. We are currently funding over 20 research projects in the UK and abroad.

Ataxia UK has been funding a range of projects over the years, researchfrom basic science research (such as understanding the disease mechanism of a particular type of ataxia) to more applied research including pilot trials of therapeutic interventions. See Ataxia UK's Research Strategy for more information.

Ataxia UK is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC), a membership organisation of the leading medical and health research charities in the UK (see right). Ataxia UK complies with the AMRC's guidelines of best practice in managing research programmes. As well as funding research, we also facilitate it, and can help with recruitment to studies. Please contact us for details.

You may also like to visit the websites of NAF, FARA, and Euro-ataxia, other organisations also funding research.

For information on healthcare research, see our section for healthcare professionals.

Ataxia UK also supports research by helping to recruit participants to research studies. Go to Taking part in research to find out about opportunities to get involved in projects.  For any questions about research, please contact Ataxia UK's research team on 020 7582 1444 or email research@ataxia.org.uk
