Children & Young People

At Ataxia UK we work with many children and young people who have ataxia. Friedreich's ataxia, the most common inherited type, usually starts in children and young people. If you are a parent and would like to put in touch with another family, please contact us on the helpline: 0844 644 0606

We have a popular Facebook ground including many parents and young people with ataxia: Weblink

Whizz-Kidz have designed this network for children who use wheelchairs, with lots of advice and a chance to connect. Weblink

Information and support for young people involved in the care of a disabled parent. Weblink

Alliance for Inclusive Education -supporting disabled children to attend mainstream school. Weblink

Resources and games for and about disabled children. Weblink

You can also buy books and resources about disability aimed at children from this organisation. Weblink

Boxofideas has information for children on dyspraxia, which is similar to ataxia. Weblink

If you're a young person with ataxia, you might be interested in a new mentoring scheme from Ataxia Together, which was set up by one of our Friends aged 27. The scheme will train young people to be mentors, and provide support to young people when they are first diagnosed.

You can watch their presentation on You Tube here and contact the group on ataxiatogether@live.co.uk
