Prevalence
How common are the ataxias?
Results from Ataxia UK funded studies give a reliable estimate for the first time. There are over 10,000 adults with ataxia in the UK. This is a much higher figure than previous estimates.
This information is important when health authorities are planning which genetic tests should be more widely available. And when Government is considering what services and how much money should go to managing long-term neurological conditions like the ataxias.
The figure of 10,000 relates to adults with a form of progressive ataxia. It does not include people who have an acquired ataxia (eg due to stroke) or have ataxia as a minor symptom of a different condition, such as multiple sclerosis.
It does not include children or young people under the age of 18.
