This section for healthcare professionals includes more detailed medical information on the ataxias (diagnosis, symptoms and management), details of Ataxia UK’s research programme and of the healthcare professionals registry.

There have been significant advances in our understanding of the ataxias during the past decade. Many new genes causing ataxias have been identified. These advances suggest that the ataxias, whilst uncommon, are underdiagnosed conditions affecting one adult in 10,000. Incidence in children and young people remains unknown.

Ataxia UK has a Scientific Advisory Committee to direct its research programme and a Medical Advisory Panel which advises on improvements to our services.
