Researchers calculate cost of rare diseases 1 March 2013
Researchers have calculated that the cost of the rare disease Friedreich's ataxia (details in article). Their work has shown that the costs of rare diseases need to be worked out rather than basing estimates on the costs of other conditions.
Successful appeal to justice for Daniel Roque Hall 8 February 2013
We are delighted by the news that Daniel Roque Hall has today won his case at the Court Of Appeal to have his prison sentence reduced from three years to 18 months. The judgement, handed down by The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Hughes, means that Daniel will be released from prison this afternoon due to the time he has already spent incarcerated, and will return to his home in North West London.

We are pleased to announce that the clinical trial, led by Prof Richard Festenstein at Imperial College London, has now started. The first people with Friedreich's ataxia have now been enrolled, and the team will investigate the tolerability and effectiveness of a potential new drug treatment.

New clinical trial of Friedreich's ataxia drug 3 January 2012
Researchers in Italy are to begin an early clinical trial of a new drug designed specifically to treat Friedreich's ataxia. Up to 20 patients with the condition will be tested with the drug, which may eventually provide a way to increase levels of frataxin, a key protein that is reduced in people with Friedreich's ataxia.

Charity bucks trend with 300% growth in local support 4 June 2009
A small charity has defied the recession to increase its local branches and support groups by nearly 300% in just three years. A grant from the Big Lottery Fund allowed Ataxia UK, the national charity for people affected by a progressive neurological condition, to achieve the surge in growth. The branches and groups are run by volunteers who are affected by the condition themselves.

The Cake Eaters is a major new film coming from the USA, starring Kristen Stewart (who recently featured in the Twilight film), as a young girl with Friedreich's ataxia. There are no current plans to release the film in the UK but copies are available online.

A Berkshire grandmother is seeking walkers to join her in a 24-hour Three Peaks Challenge on 6-7 June 2009. Sue Peake-Young, 68, will make all the arrangements for the team in aid of charity Ataxia UK.

Tina has been employed in the third sector for over 15 years, working with many diverse groups across the Midlands.
